Wally McRae was just back from Florida and looking forward to the Mt. Washington Road Race in June. (97)

Thomas Mcshane is retired from the New Hampshire Banking Department, lives in Manchester with his wife Martha, and winters in Florida--"in phone book," he adds invitingly :) (94)

Getting into the spirit of things for '04, Richard McLaughlin reports that he "had a small reunion" with Jim Keogh and other UNH graduates in Jupiter Fl. (03)

Nelson A. McLean, Rochester NH: "Semi-retired--working out of my home now--no more commuting to Concord." (02)

MaddenSomebody sent a brochure for "An Evening with Chris Calloway, Eddie Madden and Friends" in Fairbanks, AK, so I did an internet search and found this photo of Eddie blowing trombone. (00) Kathy Madden emailed: "Finally via Jean Miller [we] have been able to touch base with UNH Alum.... Met Jean at 40th reunion and have been good friends both in AZ and east coast.... We presently are at our summer home in Westwood MA--going to Castine ME to Jean's July 23 to play in concert band and visit such delightful folk. Looking forward to 50th gala!" (04) More recently, Kathy writes: "Thankfully Eddie and I are still alive and kicking [and] spending 2nd year in our summer ... abode: 22 Middle Hancock Rd., Peterborough NH 03458. Been out of state since 1958. Winter in Fountain Hills AZ now for 11 years.... Ed still busy writing and playing music. Retrieved all his published music and now has his own little publishing company." (07)

John and Charlotte Marsh "Nothing is the same in Southern California," writes Charlotte Anderson Marsh of San Diego. "The year round temperature is 75F. The sun never stops shining. There are beautiful beaches." (Yes, Charlotte, rub it in.) Her husband runs Nelson Eddy Appreciation seminars--no kidding. (94) More recently, she reports that she and husband have adopted a Great Dane from Burt Ward's famous Rescue Farm. "His name is Charles," says Charlotte, "and he is very dignified. He is also huge. He has adapted very well. Even climbs stairs too. Every inch a gentleman. Large dogs do not do much. People do not know this until they own a large dog." (04) Of the San Diego wildfires, she writes: "Tierrasanta escape this time. And, we have had power. We only had one place to go - our church - in the event we had to flee. We have those two Greyhounds with which to contend." (07)

Bob Martin notes that he served one hitch in the army (where he met and married an air force nurse, proving that any experience can be turned to good advantage) and another at IBM. He sings with the San Jose Chorus, flies a Piper Cherokee, and at last report was building a kit plane. (94)

Arthur Meyers is a Florida realtor (in Boca Raton) specializing in senior communities (just in case you were thinking of escaping from the Winter Season). (06)

Jean Gilmore Miller spends five months of the year in Castine ME and the rest in Arizona, a regimen that seems to agree with her: "I play lots of tennis and occasionally compete in short triathlons." Dr. Miller is retired; they have two daughters and a grand, all living in Arizona. More recently, Jean was looking forward to summer in Maine followed by "vacation in northern France in September, then a villa on Crete for a week." (99, 00) "Summers are wonderful on the coast in northern Maine. Am still playing competitive tennis, enjoy 2 granddaughters, and looking forward to the wedding of our youngest daughter next month. (I was a late bloomer in the baby business!)" (02) "I continue with a hand-knit bag business but no website as yet. Currently, five of my bags are on display at the Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockport. If anyone needs Christmas presents, they can contact me at jeanmiller AT RNSMTE.com" (06)

Elizabeth Foss Moore lives in Scotland; now that her husband has retired, they plan to travel to Norway, Paris, the Caribbean, and Brattleboro, VT, where their daughters live and where they've bought a condo. (00) More recently this sad news: "Husband John Moore died December 2000. Am still living in Scotland, will spend more time in Vermont with my children ... usually June and December." (02)

Claire W. Morgan: "Ken and I keep busy with Elderhostel, golf, and dancing, and I recently began lessons on the Celtic harp. At each elderhostel program I let everyone know that the beginning of this wonderful way to travel and learn was at the University of New Hampshire!" (02)

Rosemarie Dowaliby Murphy lives in Connecticut and spends the winter in Florida or Brazil; she notes that her brother Jim Dowaliby still lives in Suffolk, VA.

Phyllis Crawford Nelson, Burnsville MN: "I am still selling real estate at Coldwell Banker Burnet in the Minneapolis area. My son Michael has a reptile show business. I do assist him at some of his larger shows." (02)

Sorrowful best wishes to Marie Frechette Neubert. Tom, her husband of 48 years, died in June 2003 of lung cancer. (04)

Bill Gallagher reports: "Jim Olivier is in the techy field in Atlanta and says he is having too much fun in chemical analysis to even think about retiring." (00)

Carol Lewis O'Neil: "We are awaiting the arrival of our 9th grandchild in Boothbay Harbor ME. I think they timed the arrival so we would have good weather and be able to sit on their porch and watch the boats go by. We're looking forward to seeing everyone at our gala 50th!" (04)

Dana Pearson is "happily selling real estate out of a beautiful log cabin office in Moultonboro." (98) More recently: "Married for 46 years to Jean, three daughters, four grandchildren, same house for all these years. Have been in real estate for the last 24 years and am nearing a decision to retire. Jean still a part-time nurse, also nearing retirement. It has been a great life!" (04)

Joseph Pelis, Essex Jct VT: "Still actively working in the cranberry industry as a consultant." (02)

Lee S. Perkins and Ann Garside Perkins '57, of Kennebunkport ME: "Ann and I are building a new home in K'port and still enjoying our summer home on Lake Winnipesaukee with our 3 kids and spouses and 9 grandchildren." (02) More recently: "After two years in storage, we finally moved into our new home on Dec 3, 2002. Building is easier when you're 35." (I think that means their furniture was in storage :) (04)

Herbert R. Perryman: "Been retired for quite a long time. Have traveled and visited all the states. The daughter who went to UNH lives in Oregon, and all the rest live close by [VT] so we see 10 of the 12 grandchildren frequently." (04)

John Phillips of Salisbury has a new grand called Kirsten Margaret. (97)

Sorrowful best wishes to L. Thomas Rand, whose wife Ginny died two years ago. Otherwise, he writes: "Retired for 12 years. Busy flying my plane. Had lunch with Lois Dalton Chase." (04)

Edwina Sutherland Randall is retired in Sand Lake NY after a career as occupational therapist in Connecticut. "I am very active in church work," writes Edwina, and indeed she is. (94)

Emily Rennie retired in June 1996 but remains our loyal class treasurer. Send dues! (97) More recently: "Doug and I spent 3 weeks in New Zealand and 3 weeks in Australia.... We did get a lot of skiing in Vermont this year, mostly on manmade snow. Doug and I are still involved in many community activities. In 2000 I received the Volunteer of the Year award in our town." (02) The Rennies went to Greece and "covered much of the ancient ruins and beautiful mountains and islands." (06)

Hugo Riciputi checked in with dues for himself and his "missing" brother Remo of Lenoir City, TN, but offering no news of himself. So on a whim I looked in the phone book and found him down the road in Hampton (Hugo worked at the Portsmouth Navy Shipyard.) (00) "Enjoying retirement and hobbies, old and new." (02)

Kathryn Kennett Rider, Sinking Spring PA: "I am a homemaker who volunteers at church and for Volunteer Home Care for people needing to be transported to doctors and dentists. My husband has retired and has developed his own partnership (financial services).... Our sons are both married and the elder son and his wife have a son who will be 3 years old in May." (02)

Lynn Robertson retired once from the Air Force and again from Lockheed Space Operations. "I think this is the last," he writes from Palm Beach FL, not specifying whether or not he's in the phone book. (94)

Bruce Robertson-Dick retired from the military to live in Ogunquit ME and write for Cruising the Maine Coast. (97) Evidently he then moved to New York state: "My political science prof Houlton [Holden?] would have smiled to observe my efforts to re-elect the Village of Southampton mayor.... Tough fight but we won! Still living aboard [a boat], stilling going to meetings, still enjoying life very much indeed." (04)

Darius Robinson: "I'm retired from Sears and enjoy the computer and the Steinway." (00)

Lynn F. Robinson writes that he "just moved from Florida to Texas to be close to children and grandchildren." This is indeed good news. So many people have moved to Florida lately that I was afraid there would be a tectonic shift (Mr. Hewitt will forgive me if I use the word incorrectly) in that direction. (05)

Leo Robitaille, Dunedin FL: "After 43 years as a math instructor I have hung it up.... I use Bally's to exercise and ... I also roller blade and ride my bike on the Pinellas Country Trail [42 miles!]. I enjoy traveling--especially to Hispanic countries. My last trip was to Mexico and from there to Cuba. Cheers to all." (02)

Russell G. Rubeor, West Melbourne FL: "Really busy with local Shriner center. My term ends 1 Jan 2004. Back to New England in the summer for our reunion." (02)

Marjorie Kenyon Salathe was hoping the rain would stop and reported that Bob was recovering nicely from surgery to correct an abdominal aneurysm. (06)

Bob Sampson retired with champagne and canapes in 1998, after which he had a heart attack and extreme alterations to his chest, which he pronounced a great adventure. More recently, he was invited to do a five week course at Rivier College, Nashua NH, on the career of Winston Churchill. Later he taught courses in Yankee clipper ships and "100 Years in Nashua," for which he added his father's memories to his own. (05) "I'm doing Churchill [lectures] again this spring in the Rivier [College] program, and my '100 Years In Nashua' was very well received. It appears that after all these years I've found my calling--teaching. I'm also in correspondence with a Maryland yacht designer about a hard chine power boat that I'd like to build if the [sailboat] Resolute gets sold." (06)

Seymour Sargent of Portland OR came out of retirement to teach last year at North Carolina Central Univ. (97) More recently: "I still think about the days at Ft. Dix when we were typing away in the orderly room. Actually, I can get pretty nostalgic about the army, mainly because it was so much easier and more relaxing than I had been expecting." (It wasn't relaxing for me. I was a 'cruit; Seymour was company clerk. He probably kept me alive by ordering me out of the climactic Speed March for a typing detail.) "A colleague who retired a couple years before I did told me that after retirement you have more money than you expected and less time, and I've found it to be very true. Our son and daughter both live here in the Northwest, and we do a lot of grandparenting.... And then there's the neighborhood association and the Friends of the Library. But I do plan for us to make it back for the June reunion next year." (04)

Richard Schmigle enjoys retirement (from Rockwell International, now Boeing) in Tulsa OK. He and wife Lyn travel back to Maine each year. (04)

Rodman Schools: "I have been retired from IBM (engineer in large systems) for about 10 years and now am delighted at how enjoyable my grandchildren can be." (03)

Robert Schroeder of Hooksett is "still enjoying the real estate business but at a slower pace." (97) More recently, Ruth Nash Clark emailed: "We thought you might like some news of our classmate Bob Schroeder.... We attended a celebration in his honor in June. Bob was honored by the Hooksett Lions Club as the 2003 Citizen of the Year. He has served in various local and district leadership roles with Lions International, as well as participating in numerous civic organizations in Hooksett." (03)

John Sherman noted on the online email directory: "Retired after 32 years with Eastman Kodak in Rochester, NY. Now skiing, sailing and biking in the great state of Maine." (What a winter to return to Maine!) (01)

Jean Swett Sickels and Pete of Weld ME were planning a camping and mountain-biking trip to British Columbia last summer. (97) And skied last winter at Crested Butte, CO. (98) More recently: "Pete [Porter] and I are headed to Crested Butte, Colorado, for a week to visit our new grandson (son of Jill Sickels-Matlock, '86) and then we'll be off to Las Vegas for a week!" (02)

Barbara Smith, Epsom NH: "Retired after 28 years of teaching in elementary schools. 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Keep very busy with volunteering and family." (02)

A while back, Don Wheeler asked me for the whereabouts of Tom Snow, but the Alumni Office had him as "lost." But Don tracked him down! Tom tells me that he married Judith Fay (sister of his late wife Pat Fay Snow) in 1992, that they live on Lake Sunapee in Newbury, NH, and that they have "7 children and 11 grandchildren, and that alone can keep you busy!" (01)

John Sowerby retired from the air force and is working as an engineer for the town of Exeter. (97)

Norma Spinks of West Springfield MA interprets for the deaf ("the joy of my life") and last year worked as a one-on-one aide at Agawam High School. (97) "I'm still a teaching assistant at Agawam High School and working in the Special Education Department. I also still interpret for the deaf at our church, Bethany Assembly of God, in Agawam." (02)

Jack Holden had a mantra for his political philosophy students: "Everywhere I go in my mind, I meet Plato coming back." Carleton Eldredge liked to do riffs on that, including: "Everywhere I go in Durham, I meet Norman Stevens in the library." The library served Norman well. I had email from him when Carleton died, and it was signed: Director of University Libraries Emeritus (at UConn). Scary enough when your professors become emeriti, but classmates! Though retired, Norman was getting the Thomas J. Dodd Archives & Research Center ready for its October opening. (95) Thanks to this column, I had a visit from Norman, who in addition to his many other accomplishments (duly noted in Who's Who in America) is a humorist specializing in the foibles of librarians. See his volume, Archives of Library Research from the Molesworth Institute (Haworth Press, 1985). (96)

The alumni office sent me a belated clipping about the 250th anniversary celebration at the First Congregational Church, Barrington NH, last April. Our classmate Robert Swanson was scheduled to preach the sermon. "Now retired and living in Manchester with his wife Lenore," says the clipping, "Swanson served the Barrington church from 1963-66. A graduate of UNH and Crozer Theological Seminary, Pastor Swanson has served churches in Pennsylvania, Newfields and Salem, taught for many years at Sanborn Regional High School in Kingston, and served as a chaplain in the NH National Guard and Army Reserves." (05)

Here's a wonderful story of staying in touch, sent by Bill Sweet of Enfield NH: "Suzie and I will be heading down to Ken Gagne's annual New Year's festivities in Boxford MA. This overnight party has been held for the last 25 years or so and includes several of the Alpha Gamma Rho brothers.... Last summer we had our annual AGR reunion at Nick Wadleigh's home in Enfield.... Bill and Shirley Todd, Nick and Barb Houston, Nick and Bea Wadleigh, Fred and Sylvia Jennings, and Suzie and I represented the class of '54. We've held this gathering, in one form or another, since the 1960s.... In 2006 it will be held at Bob '53 and Ann Bolton's in Madras, Oregon. On a personal basis, Suzie and I have recently moved from Norwich VT to Enfield NH -- we just couldn't take another VT winter. I'm still raising PYO blueberries on our former property in Norwich and am thoroughly enjoying my retirement years." (06)

Marilyn Withers Thomas: "Everything is fine in Upstate N.Y. (on the St. Lawrence River). Traveling during the winter. This year to Lincoln NE [to visit her son]. Last winter to Santa Fe with Lois Chase." (06)

Simon Ulcickas bought a computer and used it to find the UNH website. "I was a member of your class for my freshman year," he writes. Si belonged to Theta Kappa Phi, co-captained the freshmen basketball team, and played freshman lacrosse. Then he left for the U.S. Naval Academy, from which he graduated in 1955. "I really enjoyed my year at UNH but unfortunately lost touch with most of the people," he writes. "I never did get a copy of the Granite so I even lost some of the names in my memory. I would appreciate your assistance on the road establishing contact with some of those friends and acquaintances." (97)

Nick Wadleigh is "self employed as an electrician" and with his wife is "headed for South Carolina in a couple of weeks to attend the graduation of our granddaughter from Basic Training at Ft. Jackson. We have a Class C motor home that we take out in the winter and early spring to check out life west of the Mississippi." (03)

Don Wheeler: "I retired about 1 1/2 years ago. Play tennis 2-3 times a week, bowl in a couple leagues, play golf every now and then and work out at a local health spa 2-3 times a week. Enjoy life and retirement." (03) A note from Dick Cilley says that Don has moved to Florida. This was no doubt a good move on Don's part, especially if he did it before this awful winter fell upon us! (05)

Edward (Ted) Wilson, Cincinnati OH: "I'm finally responding after 48 years to let you know all is well. Still not retired and will try 1 more year. My wife and I (class of '57) vacation at Gloucester MA every year, and took a tour of UNH 2 years ago. Especially enjoyed the old buildings and the hockey arena.... I introduced myself and added Class of 54. The response was WOW ... how nice." (02)

Alfred A. Zullo, Bellingham MA: "Retired last December 28 after 30 years with the postal service. All the children are grown. Have five grandchildren, ages 15 months to 19 years. Plan on doing some traveling." (02)
